Meet the RMH Therapy Dogs, Part 4: Mystery

Today’s post is very mysterious. Why you ask? Well, it’s about a mysterious dog of mysterious lineage. And appropriately enough, this dog’s name is none other than Mystery! Here’s to hoping that this interview solves some things…

Watson: So Mys, can I call you that? No? Okay. Well, let’s start things off with one of my favorite get-to-know-you questions. What’s your favorite food?

Mystery: Pizza, but my mom and dad don't leave it close enough to the edge of the counter.

Watson: May I suggest jumping? Or perhaps employing the use of a kitchen chair? Just a few ideas. Now sticking with food. Chicken or beef?

Mystery: Yes.

Watson: Chicken or Beef?

Mystery: Yes.

Watson: Oh haha. You kill me. Alright, tell me… I have been dying to ask you this… who’s your favorite celebrity?

Mystery: Yoda.

Watson: Like Yoda I as well do. Short and green he is. Since of other animals we speak, what animal be you if you could not dog be?

Mystery: A Cheetah, then those little grey things with the fluff on the tail would not get away.

Watson: Rats with tails those squirrels! When you see one, what’s the first thing that goes through your mind?

Mystery: GET OUT OF MY YARD!!!!

Watson: Such… enthusiasm! You know, I know this great person you can talk to about that… Okay moving on. Outside of visiting RMH, what is your favorite thing to do?

Mystery: Eat Pizza.

Watson: I’m going to go out on a limb here with the next question, by the readers want to know. What’s your favorite thing to smell?

Mystery: The pizza delivery man.

Watson: You are certainly a dog full of mystery. Pizza, Yoda, extreme reactions to squirrels… But one thing that’s not mysterious about you is your love for Ronald McDonald House kids.

Mystery: I love them!

Watson: And they love you! What’s your favorite part of hanging out with them?

Mystery: The belly rubs oooohhh yeah the belly rubs definitely!

Watson: And if you could say something to an RMH kid who has had a really hard day, what would you say?

Mystery: Whisper in my ears what is wrong. They are very good for listening and I will kiss away all your tears.

Meet the RMH Therapy Dogs, Part 3: Bandit and Dobby

This week I’d like to introduce you to a feisty pair of dogs who bring a lot of humor to the RMH Therapy Dog Program. Pug, Bandit, and Dobby, a Boston Terrier, were nice to sit down with me to chat about their lives in and outside of the Ronald McDonald House.

Watson: Thanks for spending a little time with me today you two. Tell me a bit about yourselves, what is your favorite thing to do other than visiting RMH?

Bandit: Barking at the moon. That’s what Mommy thinks I’ m doing. I’m really trying to get in touch with my mothership!

Dobby: Playing ball!

Watson: Interesting... and Bandit, have you ever made contact with the… never mind, I think I know the answer to that. Moving on. This is a tough one but tell me, what’s your favorite food?

Bandit: Anything that Mommy is eating.

Dobby: Anything that Mommy is eating.

Watson: You are preachin’ to the choir! Beef or chicken?

Bandit: Chicken, because I could actually catch a live one myself!

Dobby: Beef. I’m allergic to chicken.

Watson: You can catch a live chicken? Whoa. Okay, so tell me, if you could be any other kind of animal, what kind of animal would you be and why? I’m guessing it’s not a chicken.

Bandit: A human because then I could always have whatever my Mommy is eating.

Dobby: A human because then I could play pro ball!

Watson: Yes, just like the greatest quarterback of all time Peyton Manning! Did you know he passed for 408 in the 1996 Citrus Bowl? He’s Tennessee's all-time leading passer. Beat Auburn in the 1997 SEC Championship. AUBURN. They are like, really, really good. And did you know he’s a Pi Beta Kappa?!

Dobby: I meant basketball.

Watson: Oh, er… please complete the following sentence: “If dog’s ruled the world… “

Bandit: If dogs ruled the world, no one would ever go hungry. There would always be plenty of whatever Mommy is eating for everyone!”

Dobby: If dogs ruled the world, no one would fight because we’d all be having fun playing ball together!

Watson: Great answers. I think that if dog's ruled the world there would be no more sick kids. No more cancer and no more accidents. It would be a pretty wonderful place! Speaking of dog’s doing great things, what is the best part of being a RMH Therapy Dog

Bandit: Getting petted, loved, and adored by all the children, their parents, and the staff and getting to love them back. The kitchen always has good smells too!

Watson: If you could say something to a RMH kid who has had a really hard day, what would you say?

Dobby: It always helps to cuddle up in the arms of someone you love to take a nice, long, nap and dream of the things that make you happy.

Watson: One final question, what’s your favorite type of grass?

Bandit: “Backyard grass is the best. But, sometimes, front yard grass is good too, when we get the chance. After all, variety is the spice of life!”

Meet the RMH Therapy Dogs, Part 2: Tank

Watson here. For the second installment in my Pet Therapy Interview series, I had the chance to interview the biggest member of the RMH Therapy Dog team. He's a tank. No, literally... his name is Tank and he's an English Mastiff.

Watson: Tank, it's so nice to finally get the chance to sit down and talk. I have been dying to know, what’s your favorite food?

Tank: It all depends, if I want to just enjoy a good chew it’s gotta be raw bones. If I am learning a new trick then Bob, my trainer, gives me pork rinds. They are not good for me but boy are they good. I am practicing catching popcorn in mid-air, that’s a fun game

Watson: Wow, that takes mad skills. Impressive. Okay, now for a tough question. If you could be any other kind of animal, what kind of animal would you be and why?

Tank: I would be a manatee, I like the slow life style and nobody ever attacks a manatee.

Watson: And they get to live in Florida. I hear it’s really nice down there. Do you have siblings Tank?

Tank: Nope, I am an only dog.

Watson: Lucky. Just kidding. Alright, now if you could share a large, medium-rare sirloin with any of the following dogs, who would it be? Lassie, Benji, Beethoven, Eddie from Frasier or someone else?

Tank: Beethoven would be fun to talk to but you look like a nice guy.

Watson: I’m so flattered. To be named along with a superstar like Beethoven, wow. Alright let’s talk about what people really want to know. What is the best part of being a RMH therapy dog?

Tank: The hugs.

Watson: And if you could say anything to an RMH kid who is having a really hard day, what would you say?

Tank: It will be okay, tell me about all of your problems I am a great listener.

Watson: Thank you Tank. Okay one last question. Beef or chicken?

Tank: Beef

Meet the RMH Therapy Dogs, Part 1: Lacey and Pooh

As you know, intrepid journalism has always been a passion of mine. Some say journalism has gone to the dogs… well all I have to say to them is what exactly is the problem with that? This dog nose a great story when he smells one. I get a whiff of a good lead and I’m on it like Lassie on a well… like Snoopy on Herald Square… Like Smokey on SEC Championships… You get the idea.

All I’m saying is that if there’s dirt, I’ll dig it up. And whoa doggy do I have some good dirt for you today.

Over the past few weeks, I sat down with members of the Ronald McDonald House’s elite team of Therapy Dogs to find out just what make these heroic dogs wag. (And just so you know, just because I’m the president and founding member of the “I Heart RMH Therapy Dogs Association” doesn’t mean I didn’t ask them the hard hitting questions. I did.) As you can see from this interview with Keeshond siblings Pooh and Lacey, things got real folks.

Watson: So Pooh, what’s your favorite food?

Pooh: Dried Apricots

Watson: That is a very healthy choice Pooh. I also enjoy foods that are good for my digestion. Speaking of food, when you see a squirrel, what is the first thing that goes through your mind?

Pooh: Run!

Lacey: Get it!

Watson: I feel you on that Lacey. A bubbling pot of stew is usually the first thing that comes to my mind… It’s weird. Okay, now tell me about your experiences as Ronald McDonald House Therapy Dogs. What’s the best part?

Pooh: Visiting all the fun people and getting love and petting.

Watson: Ah, petting is great, isn’t it? Especially when they scratch right behind the ears… Oh man. Okay Lacey, what about you? If you could say something to a RMH kid who has had a really hard day, what would you say?

Lacey: Sit here with me and let me take away that pain.

Watson: People sometimes underestimate the positive impact dogs can have on someone who is going through a lot of pain. We just know how to make it all better. I see you are both wagging in agreement. I’m so glad you shared that Lacey.

Okay, one final question for you both, this is for a poll. I am asking all of the Therapy Dogs this. Chicken or Beef?

Lacey: Beef.

Pooh: BEEF!

Happy Birthday Watson and Peanut!!!

They partied on the RMH playground yesterday and enjoyed a few treats in celebration of their 9th and 6th birthdays, which are actually today.

We are so lucky to have these two as our House dogs and so grateful to their mom, RMH Night Manager Jeanie, for sharing them with families and staff. They bring so much joy to the House and the families who stay here.

Thank you for being such good pets Watson and Peanut. Happy Birthday!

Watson's Great Adventure

I'm bbbaaccckkk!

Watson here. I've had a very exciting summer traveling across the USA sporting my Sport a Shirt. As you can see, I visited some awesome attractions and met some cool folks. Big Tex was super nice. He's a giant, but I don't hold that against him.

The food at South Carolina's mucho famous South of the Border was muy caliente. Pedro makes some mean Carne Asada if you ask me.

Carhenge was probably my favorite. Not only do I love roadside tributes to ancient British landmarks, but I also love cars and running in circles.

My vaca was pretty awesome but it's good to be back in Ardmore. I've missed all of my friends here at the Ronald McDonald House, especially the families.

Since I have been gone all summer I think I'll take over the blog for a while. I know how much you've missed me! I'm putting the finishing on my "Therapy Dogs -- An Extrospective" series. Check back next week for the first of several interviews with the Ronald McDonald House's top dogs and find out just what makes them wag.

Alright, I'm off to say hello to the kitchen. Oh, how I have missed it!

Our Favorite Things

We got to do two of our favorite things today-- welcome back a healthy, happy former family for a visit and say bon voyage to a healthy, happy RMH family that has been staying with us!

We love when our former families come back to visit just to say hi. It is great to catch up, show them around the new expansion and hear recollections about their time at the House.

So, we were very excited when former RMH kid Timothy and his mom, Inett, stopped by today for a visit! Timothy's parents stayed at the House from December 2005 to January 2006 while he was recovering from spinal surgery at Brenner Children's Hospital. This visit they brought along a new friend-- Timothy's teacher Chris (pictured here with Timothy, now 21).

They had a great time seeing the new additions to the House and we enjoyed hearing about all of the fun things they have been up to in recent weeks-- including taking a hot air balloon ride!

Another one of our favorite things is seeing healthy, happy families head home to their own houses! Today we waved goodbye to sweet baby Hayden--he got to go home with his mom and dad!

Student Life Camp Attendees Give Back

This week, 1,200 high school students converged on the campus of Wake Forest University for the 2011 Student Life Camp. Part of their week at camp involved going out into the local community to volunteer. We were so very lucky to have a group of campers come help us here at the Ronald McDonald House!

The wonderful Student Life campers from the Freedom Fellowship Church Youth Group in White Pine, Tennessee put in a ton of work to help make our House a comfortable, clean place for families. They scrubbed the tile floor and washed the many windows that line the porch. They even gave the window screens a deep cleaning!

They also helped spruce up a few bedrooms that needed a little TLC.

All of their hard work really paid off. Our families are now enjoying a pollen and dust free porch and spotless guestrooms.

Thank you Freedom Fellowship Youth Group and Student Life Camp for sharing your gracious and hard working students with us. We are so appreciative!

School's Out for Summer

I am always impressed by the large number of children and teens in our area that stop by the House for tours, often bringing along donations of toys, snacks and change. Though they may have never experienced an illness or extended hospital stay themselves, they feel very connected to their peers staying at our House and want to help as much as possible.

They often think of things that we as adults sometime miss. They want to know, “do RMH kids bring their favorite toys with them?” (Yes, but if not we have toys here for them to play with.) They wonder, “are hamsters allowed to come stay at the House too?” (No, pets have to stay at home with friends and family.) “Do RMH kids get to eat Chicken McNuggets every day?” (McDonald's Night is on Monday's and yes, they can eat free McNuggets!) “Do the families like the cool, squishy mattresses at the House?” (They LOVE our Tempur-Pedic beds!) And of course they always want to know “does Ronald live here and do we get to meet him?” (Yes! This is his house after all and maybe, he is a pretty busy guy.)

While the adults I speak to about the House tend to be more focused on the heavier things--treatments, expenses and the unimaginable stresses that go along with caring for a very sick child-- kids zero in on the smaller but extremely important things that really make our House a home. They want to make sure RMH kids have the things that they know will comfort them as they heal-- stuffed animals, coloring books, morning cartoons, chicken and stars soup.

This is a busy time of year for us and we have lots of kids staying at the House during the summer months. Since school is out, many RMH families bring brothers and sisters along while their sibling is receiving medical treatment. If they are able, some RMH families will schedule surgeries and treatment for the summertime so that they have time to recover without missing school. Because we have so many children here during this time of year, it is a really great time for your kids and family to get involved with helping RMH kids and families.

Here are a few fun ways your kids can get involved with helping us take care of their sick peers this summer:

Hold a bake sale for RMH in your front yard or at your July 4th neighborhood block party *

Have a lemonade stand for RMH *

Have a penny war with friends. See who can collect the most spare change for RMH over the next two months and then count it on the last day of summer to see who the winner is.

Make care packages for RMH kids -- they love what you love!

Decorate cupcakes or make brownies and bring them to the House for families.

Rockin', Runnin' and Eatin'

Have you ever run a 10k? It's hard work. The training, the shin splints... no thanks.

You see, I am more of a napper. In fact, napping is a sport I truly excel at. Well that, and competitive eating, of course. I'm also excellent at that.

Speaking of competitive eating, have you ever had a scone? They are these fancy British dog biscuits thingies. Peanut made some in celebration of the Royal Wedding a few weeks ago. She said the Queen's corgis make them all of the time. They were pretty good. I could probably eat 50 of them right now. Anyway, what was I saying? Oh yes. Running.

So a few weeks ago mom told me that she was going to run a 10 k called "The Rockin' Ronald McDonald." Obviously, I was not interested. Who would want to run that far? Ears flying all over the place. Jowls flopping every which way. Paws pounding the pavement. You know what I'm talking about. I'm sure you've seen that embarrassing email going around. Yeah, you know the one...

Not my idea of a good time.

But then she told me that the 10 k involved a barbecue buffet and I started to change my tune. I might consider running 6.2 miles if I knew there was a pound of Lexington Style pulled pork waiting for me at the finish line.

But mom knows my real weakness... that woman, I swear. She told me that ALL of the money raised from the race would benefit The Ronald McDonald House... So of course, I was in. All in. These paws were made for running folks! I stepped up the pace on my walks, did a few sit ups, played with kids on the RMH play equipment. I was ready, ready to rock, run... eat.

I hate to admit it folks but I'm no greyhound. 6.2 miles is a really long way for a Basset Hound to run. So when the day finally came and I ended up cheering on mom and 220 other awesome 10k and 5k runners from the sidelines.

Afterwards, all of the runners had a blast hanging out at The First Street Draught House with me, The Honey James' Band, and the event organizers, super couple Matt and Elizabeth Jalazo. Here they are:

Even though I ended up not exactly running, I think the event was a major success! Thanks to Matt, Elizabeth and all of the wonderful folks who did end up running and walking in the race (unlike yours truly), almost $2,700 was raised to support the Ronald McDonald House.

Around the House

Things have been busy!

Our Family Support Volunteers have been busy organizing all kinds of fun activities with families--from crafts and therapy dog visits to Monday night Bingo.

Recently, our lovely Stampin' Up! volunteers, Karen Culler and Susy Miller, helped families create these adorable pocket sized photo albums. Now, they can carry photos of sweet memories made with their children wherever they go!

Our kitchen crew has been busy as well, preparing many delicious meals for families over the last couple of weeks.

Thank you McDonald's, Mt. Tabor UMC, South Fork Church of Christ, Knollwood Ecclesia Class, Mike and Penni Bradshaw, Linda Raby, Cathie Cooper, Carol Nelson Ferrell, Aramark/Wake Forest Dining Services, WS Prime and all of our wonderful meal donors. You take such wonderful care of our families each and every night!

This next little tidbit is more of a "peek behind the scenes" but boy does it have to do with an important House operation. Last week, our old check machine (like the ones the tellers use at the bank) went on the fritz. Thankfully, our new friends at Digital Check Corp. jumped in and saved the day with a generous donation of not one, but TWO, digital check scanners! We are now processing gifts made by RMH supporters smoothly on our two (!!!) new machines. We are so grateful to Digital Lab Corp. for helping us with this important operational task.

Take me out to the ball game!

Yesterday, we celebrated our three wonderful Wake Forest University interns with a trip to watch the Winston-Salem Dash take on the Frederick Keys! Thanks to our friends at Southern Community Bank and Trust, we were able to enjoy a fun afternoon in the super nice Southern Community Suite at the ballpark.

We didn't let the torrential downpour at the bottom of the 6th spoil the fun. (We are definitely not fair weather Dash fans-- not even a tornado watch will keep us from rooting on the home team!)

The rain break turned out to be the perfect opportunity to give each of our interns their cute new RMH tote bag.

It was a fantastic send off and we are so appreciative to Southern Community Bank and Trust and the Winston-Salem Dash for such a fun experience!

Now a bit about these three hard working ladies...

Lisa Northrop interned with us the longest, joining the RMH team four years ago as a freshman. In that time she has become an important part of our Friends of the Ronald McDonald House program, working with Friends Members and Development Coordinator, Nancy Spaugh, to raise money for the House. Lisa's dedication to volunteerism was recognized last year by North Carolina Governor Beverley Purdue when she was named winner of the Community Impact Student Award. She will continue her work in the non-profit world after graduation next week when she joins the staff of another local charity. We are glad she'll be nearby but will miss seeing her around the House!

Rachel Wilson has been a member of the RMH team for three years and worked closely with our Director of House Operations. Honestly, there are days when we really don't know what we would have done without her! She was truly indispensable during the construction of our most recent 18 bedroom expansion and knows the Ronald McDonald House from top to bottom, inside and out! Rachel has been our go to with questions about the expansion and new space... all 18,000 sqft of it! We will miss her when she graduates from Wake Forest next week and moves on to pursue a career in medicine. But, we know she has a bright future ahead!

Taylor Brown came on board in September 2010 and quickly endeared herself to staff and families with her sweet personality and sense of humor. As a founding member of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority at Wake Forest, she was already very familiar with the mission of the Ronald McDonald House before interning at the House. She proved to be a tremendous help to us here in the development office, working with Development Director, Mindy Bloom, and yours truly to organize events, coordinate Sport a Shirt, Share a Night and thank RMH supporters. She moves to Philadelphia to begin her career in corporate Human Resources after graduation and while we are really proud of her, we hate to see her go!

Congratulations Lisa, Rachel and Taylor on your graduation from Wake Forest, we are so proud of you!

Celebrating Three Generations of Volunteering

Morgan Christian was 12 when she decided she wanted to volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House in Winston-Salem. Since she wasn’t quite old enough to help out at the House on her own, she recruited her “naana”, Carolyn Blakley, to volunteer with her.

Now, six years later, five members of the Christian-Blakley family serve families as volunteers at the Ronald McDonald House. Morgan’s cousin, Chase, followed in her footsteps beginning in 2008, accompanying Carolyn to the House to help with chores and assist families. Her mom, Kim, joined the RMH volunteer team in 2009 and her youngest cousin Gracyn began volunteering last year.

At some point during each week over the last six years, at least one member of the Christian-Blakley family has folded laundry in the RMH laundry room, stocked the kitchen cabinets or checked a guest room ahead of a new family arrival. After countless hours of volunteering at the House, Carolyn says that it is the seemingly little tasks that really keep the House going.

Carolyn, who also volunteers in the Ronald McDonald Family Room at Forsyth Medical Center twice a month, says the entire family has been touched by their time spent helping families at the House. “As a family, we do enjoy coming together, doing something good, something positive.”

Spring has sprung here at the Ronald McDonald House, just in time for Easter! The Easter Bunny will be definitely be impressed when he hops through RMH this weekend. Thanks to our volunteers (and a little help from Mother Nature) the House has been transformed inside and out. I think you'll agree that it looks egg-cellent!

It's Here!!!

It's "Sport a Shirt, Share a Night" Day! People all over are sporting their tee shirts in support for the Ronald McDonald House of Winston-Salem and the families who stay here.

Not only do we have thousands sporting shirts here in North Carolina but supporters are joining in all over the country-- from sea to shining sea!

So I want to know, where are you sporting your Sport a Shirt today? At work? In the backyard? At the beach? At a baseball game? At school? Send me a pic! Spring has sprung at the Ronald McDonald House and you know what that means... to quote one of my favorite reality stars, DWTS contestant and Jersey Shore housemate Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino... it's tee shirt time!

"Sport a Shirt, Share a Night" day is April 15th. Since I've already done my taxes, I am looking forward to spending the entire day showing my support for the Ronald McDonald House of Winston-Salem by sporting my $10 Sport a Shirt tee shirt all over town. (Of course, you are welcome to sport your shirt even if your taxes aren't done yet. I heard a rumor that they are actually due on the 18th this year.)

Last year, I sported my shirt for a few photos and my fans really seemed to love the pics. Well, I've read all of your letters, tweets and facebook messages begging for more and folks, I have delivered!

Ronald is the next Bachelor!

But he did have a big date yesterday with a local celeb, comedian Sarah Barnhardt! Check out video footage from their first date over on Sarah's Blog, The Dueling Butter Knives. Ronald told me later that he thought the date went really well. The guy can't stop smiling! Do I hear wedding bells? I know an excellent Best Dog candidate...

Saying Farewell and Welcoming New Faces

Today we wish a Happy Retirement to Anita Ogburn, Executive Director of the Ronald McDonald House of Winston-Salem. Over the past 14 years, Anita has left mark on the hearts of countless families, staff members, and friends of the Ronald McDonald House. We will always remember her leadership, dedication, and passion, and we are incredibly grateful for her legendary vision and persistence. We wish her well as she begins her retirement and enjoys time with her family and four (soon to be five) grandchildren.

We also are saying goodbye to Director of House Operations, Sarah Holthouser. For the past 11 years, Sarah has greeted families with a bright smile! We wish her all the best as she begins her new job with Salem Baking Company and thank her for her dedication to and love for the Ronald McDonald House.

We are excited to welcome Sharon Fulcher-Tatom as new Executive Director of the Ronald McDonald House. Sharon is a native of Southern Virginia and joins the Ronald McDonald House from the Masonic Children and Family Services of Texas. We are excited to have her aboard and welcome her to the RMH family!

My Oh My, That's One Mighty Pretty Apple Pie!

Food is such an important part of the Ronald McDonald House. After a long day at the hospital caring for their sick child, the last thing families should have to worry about is where their next meal is coming from.

Thanks to a truly remarkable group of volunteers who mix, cook and bake night after night, RMH families never go hungry.

And my oh my do our volunteers do a GREAT job! We have some of the BEST cooks in the Triad donating their resources, talents and time to serve delicious meals and big helpings of love in our dining room each and every night.

Speaking of big helpings, take a look at this pie.

This is not your average apple pie. This pie is a Ronald McDonald House-sized pie. The photo really doesn't do it justice. I didn't even know that they made pie tins this big! Here's a close up, try not to drool...

This pie was lovingly baked by a volunteer who is new to our Meal Program.

Carol Nelson was once a caterer and she now enjoys volunteering her time and talents with local organizations. Last week she cooked a wonderful meal for our families and graciously shared her pie recipe with me to share with you. So, without further ado, I give you the most gigantic apple pie ever! The recipe is pretty straight forward so if you have all the ingredients handy, you could be eating one big slice of pie in about 60 minutes.

Prepare to unbutton the top button on those jeans!

Carol's Apple Pie

5 or 6 tart apples sliced thin
2 Tablespoons sugar
1 teas nutmeg
1/4 cup flour
1/2 cup brown sugar
2 Tablespoons butter in small bits
3 tablespoons milk
Pie crust dough (refrigerated) for lattice top and bottom

Toss all ingredients together and place in pie crust. Cut remaining dough into strips and place in criss-cross pattern to form lattice top. Brush with some melted butter or spray with cooking spray.

Bake at 350 degrees until apples are done. (45 minutes to one hour)

Back to the Future?

I've been very, very busy with a new mystery lately friends, let me bring you up to speed.

Ronald seems to be defying the laws of physics. You see, Ronald lives on our playground in the backyard. He has for years. He usually sits very still and he rarely ever says anything, so I have gotten used to him just hanging out there. I sniff his feet sometimes, but that's pretty much it.

So you can imagine how shocking it was when I drove by the House the other day with mom (I love riding the in the car!) and there he was, in the front yard!

Talk about startling.

But get this. When we pulled around to the backyard he was right there in his usual spot!

I was convinced I was seeing things. You see, I had just gotten a bath at the vet and I was very excited to be in the car. My mind was just playing tricks on me, right? So… I went out to the front yard just to check... and there he was! Do you have any idea how fast you have to be to make it from the front yard to the back yard at my house? Fast. Like, lightning fast. Like, Olympian sprinter fast. Faster than me even, and I have four legs! But Ronald didn't even break a sweat. He was just sitting there, hanging out on his bench watching traffic go by like it is something he does every day.

And the craziest part of all of this is that he has been doing this all day long!

What I can't figure out is how he manages to move back and forth so quickly. And why he has suddenly decided to take up running? Is he training for a triathlon and he didn't tell me? Or has he decided to take a page out of Marty McFly's (aka Michael J. Fox) playbook and be in two places at the same time? Has Ronald gone Back to the Future?

You know, now that I mention it, the other day I could swear I saw a DeLorean parked in the parking lot...

Tiny but Strong: Baby Noah's Story

Two days after Noah came into the world he was admitted to Brenner Children's Hospital in Winston-Salem with a heartbreaking diagnosis -- cancer. Pregnancy had been healthy and normal for new parents Lucinda and Seth, so finding out their newborn infant was born with cancer was shock. Diagnosed with stage 4 neuroblastma nerve cancer, the 6.7 lb newborn began the first of eight rounds of intense chemotherapy treatments just a few weeks after his birthday. After his first round of chemo he had his gallbladder removed. And later, he underwent a blood transfusion.

As Noah fought cancer in the NICU, Lucinda and Seth prayed for their little boy from their room across the street at the Ronald McDonald House. They spent three weeks as guests at the House and were never more than a few minutes from their little boy's side. "It was such comfort in knowing when we couldn't stay with Baby Noah we were only like three seconds from him."

Lucinda and Seth call the Family Room inside Brenner "a blessing for us and our family." There they were able to seek respite in a welcoming and warm space. They could eat lunch and talk with family and friends all just a few steps from Noah's crib.

Noah is still fighting his cancer and has a tumor on his lung that doctors are watching carefully. But Lucinda and Seth say his prognosis right now is good.

He just had his first bath in the tub a few weeks ago, a big step since he hasn't been able to have a regular bath due to treatment. He may not have realized it, but his bath was a big deal for mom and dad too. It was a joyful milestone marked by lots of pictures and smiles says Lucinda, "Noah is so happy!"

I have been working overtime to make sure all of the RMH families have a very Merry Christmas this year. You see, the red-suited one sent word that he needed a little help to make sure all of our families had presents under the tree this year! Of course, I was more than happy to help out my old pal from the North Pole. He and I go way back.

Speaking of elves, my team of RMH elves from Temple Emanuel and First Presbyterian Church have been helping alot too.

They are busy wrapping all kinds of fun gifts for RMH kids donated by wonderful people from all over!

Peanut, who is terrified of elves, boxes, wrapping paper rolls and scotch tape (long story...) has even gotten caught up in the spirit of things! In fact, just the other day while I was investigating my way through the basement to make sure the community room fridge was, um, secure, I caught her in the playroom admiring this toy themed tree donated by the Heart of Carolina Street Rodders.

Alright, I'm off to oversee the RMH gift wrapping department and investigate a few Christmas cookies.

A Tale of Two (make that six) Snow Villages

I watched quietly from across the room as JoAnn Morgan carefully added one final snow drift along the foundation of the North Pole Flight Tower. Peggy Kiger smiled as she unpacked a 4-inch tall fir tree from its storage box. "Families need all the cheer they can get, especially at Christmas," she said as she plopped the tree down on a table with 25 other trees creating a small forest in the middle of the living room. Standing next to me, Rose Simmons nodded her head in agreement. "For some families this is about all of the Christmas they get. I hope it helps to make their day."

The holidays can be a very hard time of year for the families here at the Ronald McDonald House. Not only are they are worried about their child and missing love ones at home, they are also missing out on many of their own special holiday traditions. Thankfully, a small army of Christmas-time volunteers work together each year to bring joy to the big House on the corner of Hawthorne and Queen.

Beginning at the end of November, the House gradually transforms into a winter wonderland full of Christmas trees, garland, stockings and blinking lights. Since the House first opened 26 years ago, friends and volunteers have lovingly decorated it for the holidays as if it was their own. But it wasn't until the mid 1990's that the elaborate displays of tiny snow towns joined the annual transformation.

It all began in 1996 when the holiday collectible maker Department 56 got together with Olympic ice skater Dorothy Hamill to help deck the halls of America's Ronald McDonald Houses. They donated several pieces from their whimsical North Pole Series to many Houses around the country including our House here in Winston-Salem.

A story about this donation featured in that year's Department 56 catalog caught the attention of JoAnn Morgan, a local collector and member of the Pfafftown Baptist Church Baptist Women Mission. As the owner of five snow villages, JoAnn knew the intricacies and time involved in setting up these tiny towns. So JoAnn gathered her friends from the Mission and offered to set up the new North Pole Village for the House.

14 years later, JoAnn and the lovely ladies of Pfafftown Baptist have become a holiday institution here at the Ronald McDonald House. On the week of Thanksgiving each year, they spend several hours unpacking and carefully placing miniature taverns, stores and homes with glowing windows on blankets of cotton snow throughout the House. They make sure that each of the six RMH village scenes are correctly assembled down to the smallest detail, from the tiny trees and mini park benches to the pint-sized elves at work outside Mrs. Claus' greenhouse.

The "Snow Village Ladies" as they are fondly called around the House remember with pride one particular structure in the 36 piece collection, the miniature "House that Love Built." In 1998 the House received a special gift from Department 56-- a Ronald McDonald House built especially for the tiny townspeople of the North Pole. Much like the life sized Ronald McDonald House, this miniature replica is the centerpiece of the bustling town, glowing brightly and warmly welcoming in families in need.

As the ladies finished up JoAnn dusted a few loose snow flakes from the roof of the Santa's Flight Tower and called back to me over her shoulder. "To me seeing a village is very enjoyable, these families need that. That's why we do it and that's why will we continue to do it every year."

Mackynzie and Karen-Elaine's RMH Story

Mackynzie and his mom Karen-Elaine have been coming to the Ronald McDonald House a few times a year over the past 10 years. Mackynzie, who turned 13 this summer, was born with a rare genetic disorder called Aarskog Syndrome. When he was born, doctors told Karen-Elaine that he would not live to be three years old. We asked Karen-Elaine to share Mackynzie's story with you today.

What are the hardest parts of having a child in the hospital?

Being away from family and friends (support) is really hard because I am a single mother. It is very hard to be by myself and feel helpless.

Are there any other difficulties?

Having to watch all of the tests, surgeries and other medical things being done and feeling like there is nothing I can do. The financial burdens too, having to come from six hours away three to five times a year is very hard.

How does staying at the Ronald McDonald House help?

Mackynzie and I have been coming to RMH for over 10 years. I am so grateful for RMH. At a hotel, you just have your room and that is it. At RMH you have your room of course, but there is so much more. There are the family rooms, the kitchen, the activities and the wonderful staff. Plus, it is a lot easier financially for families. We love RMH!

What things does Mackynzie like to do while he is staying here in the House?

He enjoys the teen room and loves to play video games. He also loves McDonald's Night, Bingo, and having 'doughnut mornings'. He told me once that the Ronald McDonald House of Winston-Salem was a part of his family.

Are there any other aspects about the House that you find important?

Family atmosphere is really important and RMH is loaded with it. There are other families dealing with the same things you are and there is always someone to talk to.

Would you like to share anything else with our readers?

Yes. I am so thankful for Mackynzie. He has been my miracle from the day he was born. I have learned to take nothing for granted and to always appreciate the little things! RMH of Winston-Salem, the staff, volunteers and other families have been a part of our lives for a long time and I am grateful every day.

Yes, I know that is a silly question! Thanksgiving is only four days away and if you are anything like me, you probably went twice this weekend! On your next trip to the store would you mind adding an extra item to your cart for RMH families?

The House is getting pretty low on some very important pantry items. While we need and use everything on our Family Wish List, there are a few items that we are in desperate need of here at the House right now. They are:

Items can be dropped off at the House from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm Monday - Friday, 9:00 am to 2:00 pm on Saturday and from 2:00 pm to 9:00 pm on Sunday.

Meet Baby RJ

Rico and Carla were the first family to stay in our newly expanded Ronald McDonald House while their newborn son RJ was treated for life-threatening injuries he sustained during delivery. Rico and Carla were more than happy to share their experience as a Ronald McDonald House family.

Why is RJ in the hospital?

When he was born he lost 35 minutes of oxygen and lost half of the blood in his body due to his umbilical cord being cut. He had to have CPR performed on him for about an hour or more.

What are the three hardest parts of having a child in the hospital?

1. Wondering everyday if your child is going to be okay or not.
2. Relying on strangers to take care of your child if you can’t be at the hospital every day.
3. Having other children at home knowing they miss you and not really understanding that you need to be with the sick baby. You feel torn when you leave them.

What are the best parts of staying at the Ronald McDonald House?

The House really feels like a home away from home. Everyone goes out of their way to make sure you have all your needs met.

Why is it better to stay at the Ronald McDonald House than a hotel?

At RMH you have others to talk to, it has all of the comforts of home. They have people that can explain information of put in place things you might need from the community. Being able to have activities to take our minds off all the worry and stress was wonderful.

Rico and Carla’s daughters came to visit the House while their brother was in the hospital. We asked them what their daughters liked the most about the House:

Our two daughters stayed with us and enjoyed the bunk beds. Most of all they liked having the playroom and playground. We also enjoyed the free passes to SciWorks and Old Salem so we could spend some afternoons together as a family.

How have the volunteers at the House made your stay better?

The RMH volunteers really helped us in our time of need and comforted us when things were going bad. Some conducted activities to help us relax after a long stressful day. And, they gave us the strength to keep our heads up and not quit or give up. They were awesome.

Rico and Carlo wanted to share a message with you about their experience here at the House:

Never take for granted the little things in life, always cherish everything. Your health, your children, or spouse – because you never know when something can happen and you may end up in a similar situation to a lot of the families here. Always know that there are people who truly care, like the employees and volunteers here at the Ronald McDonald House. They are truly God’s angels on earth.

Baby RJ went home last week after nearly a month and a half long stay at Brenner Children’s Hospital. Carla and Rico were here at the House, right across the street from the hospital, for the entire duration of his hospital stay. They happily report that he is doing great!

On the December 24th neighbors throughout Winston-Salem honor families whose holidays will not be as bright due to the illness of their child. Please join us in lighting luminaries and placing them in front of your home this holiday season!

Why support the Light a Luminary Project?

The Light a Luminary project has provided over one million dollars in support of the Ronald McDonald House. In 2009 the project funded 19% of the House's operating budget. By purchasing a luminary kit, you are supporting the House and providing a festive display for your neighbors to enjoy.

Celebrate Thanksgiving Early This Year!

Come enjoy a free Thanksgiving dinner hosted by the Rainbow Pals! The 7th Annual Thanksgiving Benefit Banquet and Silent Auction is coming up this Sunday, November 14th at 6:00 pm. There will be live music, door prizes, silent auction and raffle all in support of a great cause. 100% of all of the money raised benefits the Ronald McDonald House of Winston-Salem!

Check out this slideshow of highlights from last year's dinner. It looks like a blast and I am so excited to gobble up lots of my Thanksgiving favorites. I can practically smell the stuffing and green bean casserole already! :)

One Small Step for Dog...

Contrary to popular belief, dogs are not color blind. That’s just some vicious rumor some guy started because he was jealous of our great sense of smell. Clearly, if I was color blind I wouldn’t have recently discovered something very shocking.

Here’s how it all started.

It is getting cold outside and things around Ardmore are starting to look less and less green. The trees are turning all kinds of pretty colors and the plants around the yard are starting to get ready for winter. Check out this pretty tree on our dining patio where families love to relax, its leaves are almost all gone!

Well, the grass in the front yard where Peanut and I like to hang out is losing its spring green tint. You know what I am talking about, that really bright green. But for some very strange reason, the grass in the backyard is still green – really, really green. Like, the prettiest shade of green I’ve ever seen. This struck me as very odd so I decided it was time to investigate.

So, I very carefully made my way down the steps towards the play area and well, how can I put this…

It’s soft, it’s luscious...

IT’S FAKE!

You should have seen Peanut when I told her, she fainted! (Don’t worry, I got her a paper bag and some smelling salts. She’s fine now, just a bit wobbly.) Once I got over the initial shock, I ventured out again on to the new permanently green lawn. How does that old expression go? Oh yes, one small step for dog, one giant leap for dog kind!

It was totally amazing. First of all, it’s a little squishier than regular grass, which is good since lots of RMH kids like to play on it. And, it never turns brown! It stays green and beautiful all year long. Even in the snow! Isn’t that wild? Another great thing about it is that it doesn’t grow, it stays the same exact length all year long. (Peanut says she likes this part the best since she is scared of lawn mowers.)

I don’t have a single complaint about it, except it for one teeny tiny little thing. Really, it’s nothing… But as far as taste goes, to say it is horrible is being very generous. It is extremely chewy with a sort-of blade like texture. And it has this odd favor to it. I can’t put my paw on exactly what it is…

Aside from the terrible taste, I'd have to say that it is the most amazing lawn ever! You should come by and see it. You can email Laura or Mindy for a tour of our new yard and the rest of the Ronald McDonald House too. :)

Happy National Sandwich Day!

Did you know that today was National Sandwich Day!? Yes, today the world celebrates the birthday of John Montagu, the fourth Earl of Sandwich and the namesake for one of America's favorite foods.

We can definitely join the celebration here at the Ronald McDonald House. Our families love sandwiches because they are a great 'grab & go' meal to take with them to the hospital. Of course, not everyone feels like having a sandwich every day. That's why we like to offer our families other quick good eats, like single serve microwavable meals, easy mac & cheese and the sandwich's favorite partner in lunchtime crime, soup!

Trick-or-Treat!

Since the families staying at the House were unable to go trick-or-treating in their own neighborhoods this year, our wonderful friends from the Rainbow Pals and Morningview of Irving Park Assisted Living in Greensboro helped to bring the trick-or-treating to them!

Morningview residents put together these fun SpongeBob and monster baskets filled with candy for each of our RMH families and the Rainbow Pals brought them to the House just in time for Halloween.

We are so grateful to the sweet residents and staff from Morningview and the Rainbow Pals for making sure that there was no shortage of treats at the House this year!

Thanks to a group of amazing volunteers the RMH kitchen is always stocked with delicious home-cooked meals. Every single night our families can gather together for a comforting meal that costs them nothing and helps them to check food off their worry list.

Our volunteers go above and beyond with the dishes they provide families and it would be impossible for me to show you every gorgeous meal that comes through our kitchen. But... I'm going to try!

Let's start with last night's dinner, prepared by the folks from the Greek Orthodox Church Philoptochos Group. Green beans, grilled lemon chicken, rolls...yum.

And take a look at this banana pudding...

I put the tea in the shot to show you some scale... that's alot of pudding! But with so many families in the House, it will not go to waste.

Now on to today's lunch, made here in the RMH kitchen this morning by a fabulous group of ladies we call the "Greensboro Four." On the menu, oven-fried chicken, spinach salad, ambrosia, and this pretty pasta salad:

Foiled!

Well folks, my plan was foiled! I couldn't convince mom to drive me to the Character Breakfast and since I am not allowed to talk to strangers (and I don’t have thumbs) hitchhiking was clearly not an option.

Since I didn’t make it this time, I had to send a spy. She reports that the breakfast was a TON of fun and brought back lots of pictures as evidence. Here are some of my favorites:

Well Howdy Y’all!

I can't believe that 133 fans voted on my disguise! I knew I was well known in some circles but I didn’t know I was that popular. I’m one hot hound doggie. Speaking of hot, have you ever worn a stuffed pumpkin costume on top of a fur coat? Whew.

I am very appreciative to you, my fans, for picking the most well-ventilated costume of the bunch, the Rodeo Bull! I was really hoping you would pick that one. Not only is it the most comfortable but it is by far the best disguise. In fact, it is so good that I’m thinking of entering the Dixie Classic Fair Rodeo next year! I have always wanted one of the big belt buckles.

Whoop-ee-ti-yi-o, city-slickers, I'd better get along. I’ll let you know how operation ‘Sneak into the Character Breakfast’ pans out.

Local Girl Scout Cadets Help RMH Families

We are fortunate to have the support of many local scout troops, including the Cadets from Olivet Moravian Church in Winston-Salem. Troop 41439 visited the House yesterday to drop off four big bins of games and coloring books that they collected for RMH families as a part of their latest community service project.

While they were here, troop members Jesse, Andrea, Laney and Emily toured the House and learned about the different ways that the Ronald McDonald House of Winston-Salem helps families heal together.

I quizzed them on their RMH knowledge throughout the tour and was so impressed with their answers, these girls did their homework! We talked about other ways they can get involved with the House and they were anxious to help out our families in the future.

Of course, Watson didn’t want to miss out on any of the excitement; he stopped by to say hi and soak up a little attention from the Cadets!

When Life Gives You Lemons...

While I was out enjoying the lovely fall foliage in Ardmore on a walk Monday, I got to chatting with one of my neighbors. She asked me something about the RMH Character Breakfast that is coming up but I to tell you the truth, I hadn't heard much about it! I’m usually very “in the know” about RMH events, but with the construction finally finished, I’ve had to do a little catching up on my reading and playing ‘words with friends’ on my iPhone.

So, I put on my detective hat and visited the RMH facebook page. It's a great place to get scoop on RMH events.

Apparently, there is going to be a BIG breakfast on October 23rd and there will be all kinds of fun characters there, even movie stars. I hear that princesses are coming too! I wonder if any of them will need to be rescued? You know, back when I was younger… er, that’s a story for another post.

Anyways, I asked mom to call the RMH reception desk (336-723-0228) to see if they could mail me an invitation to the Character Breakfast. It is super cute and it came in the mail today!

There is just one small problem... No dogs allowed.

I know, it's terrible.

Well you know what they say, when life gives you lemons, make lemon flavored dog treats! We’re not going to let this stand in our way. We’re going incognito.

I'm going as The King. Think anyone will know it’s me?

This week, the 300th Ronald McDonald House opened its doors to families in need. There are now 300 Houses throughout the world—that’s 300 places for families to be together as they help their children heal.

Dewey's Trick or Treat Cake Squares

Forget candy, the trick-or-treaters that come to my house this year are getting cake squares!

Right now, Dewey's is selling booklets with 20 free cake square coupons in them. A portion of the sale from each coupon book benefits the Ronald McDonald House of Winston-Salem.

These cake square coupons would make great favors for that upcoming Halloween party you are hosting too. Or a nice surprise in your coworkers' mailboxes at work... or in birthday party goodie bag... After all, you don't have to be a kid to love a cake square!

Sunday, September 12th was a wonderful day for the Ronald McDonald House of Winston-Salem! Not only did we officially cut the ribbon on our brand new 18- bedroom expansion, but we celebrated it with almost 500 friends from the community. Many families who have stayed at the House came back to tour the new space and celebrate as well. It was wonderful to see so many people the House has touched since it first opened its doors 26 years ago.

We are especially grateful for the generosity of BB&T, who sponsored the Open House and Ribbon Cutting and brought 35 amazing volunteers to help out.

Watson and I had the best time showing the newly expanded House to a group of local bloggers on Saturday morning.

The fun group came from all over the triad to check out the House. First, we gathered in the new kitchen to munch on some breakfast goodies donated by our sweet friends at the Reynolda Road Starbucks. (They donate delicious baked goods to the House once a week for families too!)

Then Watson, fresh from his day at the spa, stopped in to say hello. He had a great time! Of course, he pointed out to me later that he didn’t get the cream cheese danish he had ordered. Sorry Waston, maybe next time...

After breakfast, the bloggers toured the new space and learned all about what RMH does for the families of sick children.

Where should I begin?

This weekend was truly incredible. From celebrating RMH volunteers and meeting local bloggers to seeing so many former RMH families and members of the community come tour the new expansion, this weekend was full of amazing experiences to share.

Let’s start with Friday night’s Volunteer Event.

I’m biased… but I think we have some of the best volunteers in town! :) They are really what keep this House and our two Family Rooms running. They clean rooms, change light bulbs, weed flower beds, cook meals, stock refrigerators, call bingo and visit with families at the hospital. And that’s just a small sample of what they do, the list of things goes on and on. They work so hard to make the House and Family Rooms a welcoming place and their love for RMH families is inspirational.

Friday’s Volunteer Appreciation Party was a blast!

House and Family Room volunteers enjoyed lots of good food and toured the new space. Of course, many of our volunteers didn’t really need tours—some of them have been here practically every single day helping to get the House ready for families.

Here are a few highlights from the party:

We also honored some special volunteers who really stood out from the pack this year.

Forsyth Family Room Volunteer of the Year is Lisa Petty (pictured with volunteer Dinah Reece, who presented the award). Lisa’s bubbly personality and bright smile lightens up the Family Room ever time she volunteers.

Jack Arzonico was named Brenner Family Room Volunteer of the Year. Jack’s experiences gained from raising a large family make him a good person for young dads to talk with while they are in the Family Room. (Pictured with volunteer Jo Anne Helms, who presented the award.)

The lovely Claire McNaught was named Family Support Program Individual Volunteer of the Year. Claire and her dog, Rocket Dog, have worked as a part of our Therapy Dog program since 2006. She and Rocket Dog bring a special brand of joy to the children and families they visit twice a month. (Pictured with Family Support Coordinator Chacy.)

Family Support Program Programming Volunteers of the Year honors were given to a group of talented women who bring peace to families through creativity. Shannon Jeune (not pictured), Susy Miller and Karen Culler of Stampin’ Up! help families make beautiful homemade cards for them to give to medical staff and friends and family back home. In addition, they make thousands of cards each year for the Family Support Program to use in comforting families and celebrating volunteers.

Our House Volunteer of the Year always is usually reserved for an individual. But this year, we cheated a little bit and gave it to a very special group… our hard working House Maintenance Team! Typically, they are here once a week. But in the past few months, they have been here around the clock! In August, they volunteered 160 hours, a huge increase compared to their average of 45 hours a month. Craig Smith, Dan Heaton, Charlie Mays, Charlie Miller (all pictured), Tony Ebert, Larry Stalnaker and Stacey Wood (not pictured) are, as volunteer coordinator Abby Bowman describes them, “our knights in shining armor!”

This year we also honored a special long-time volunteer. Charlie Mays, the founding member of our Maintenance Team, has been a House volunteer for 18 years. A retired chemist from R.J. Reynolds, Charlie has been our resident engineer, light bulb changer, furniture installer and plumbing fixer-upper for almost two decades. There really isn’t anything he can’t fix! So, in honor of all of his hard work and his truly remarkable dedication to the Ronald McDonald House, the brand new storage room has been named in his honor.

All of are volunteers are great and we were so honored to have them join us on Friday night.

Celebrating RMH!

Last night, we were honored to host a very special group of people here at the Ronald McDonald House. Friends who have generously supported the mission of the House over the years joined together to toast the start of a new chapter in the RMH story. Through their generosity, the dream of an 18-bedroom expansion has been realized and now, 700 more families a year will be able to call The Ronald McDonald of Winston-Salem home.

That means 700 more parents, grandparents, sisters and brothers will be able to stay closer to their sick child. That’s countless more hugs, kisses, held hands, smiles and I love you’s for children fighting for their lives just down there street from RMH.

Here are a few highlights from last night’s wonderful event:

So many people helped to make this event special through the donation of their time and talents.

The beautiful flower arrangements by Sissy Whittington and Sally Corpening made for stunning focal points throughout the House.

Delicious food by Five Loaves Fine Food was a hit with guests.

Lovely music was graciously provided by the very talented Bluebird Quartet, harpist Julie Money and classical guitarists Joe and Alexander Pecoraro.

Magician Hannibal kept guests mystified all night with illusions and tricks.

And, a spectacular cake given by Dewey’s Bakery stole the show!

Of course, this event would not have possible without the help of our amazing volunteers, whose hearts are filled with love for RMH families.

We are looking forward to celebrating our 260+ strong volunteer force tonight with a special volunteer event honoring them.

Our official Open House and Grand Opening is this Sunday from 3 to 5 pm. Come see "the House that Love Built'—a very unique place for families to stay as they face some of life’s hardest challenges.

Please plan to stop by to enjoy all of the festivities, food and fun! Whitaker Elementary Wheel Power and Whirlwind will be performing along with the R J Reynolds High Acappella Groups. Ronald will be there too, along with several Wake Forest athletes, the Wake and WSSU cheerleading squads and much more!

This whole playground disappearance really has me howling mad. First, the play equipment went missing, which was pretty upsetting. Then, someone drove a bulldozer all over my beautiful lawn which, to tell you the truth, almost sent me over the edge.

But this is the last straw. Last night, some clown with gigantic feet walked all over the new, freshly poured concrete walkway!

Tough Cookies

The Ronald McDonald House is no stranger to strong kids—we see tough kids every day here at the House. Tough kids like Jacob.

Jacob and Ronald

Jacob and his family stayed at the Ronald McDonald House for three months in 2004 while he was being treated for cancer at Brenner Children’s Hospital.

Jacob, his older brother Sam and their parents Kim and Lee managed to stay pretty busy during their stay here at the House. They even hung out with NASCAR driver Kasey Kahne one day at his garage in nearby Mooresville, NC.

With his family and all of the staff here at the Ronald McDonald House cheering him on, Jacob received a bone marrow transplant at Duke University, fought his cancer and won! He is now a happy, healthy 8 year-old and still one tough cookie.

Speaking of cookies, Jacob and his family stopped by the House yesterday with some homemade treats to share with the families of other tough kids who call the Ronald McDonald House home.

Kim shared this message on Facebook after their visit, “Thank you for all that you did for our family six years ago and for all that you continue to do to make families like ours comfortable during difficult times.”

There has been a huge break in the case!

Last night, while on patrol I sniffed out this picture. I have to warn you, the following image is shocking:

Clearly we are dealing with a much more serious crime-- someone has been driving on the lawn! At some point in the last week, an unidentified bulldozer removed the playground and in the process, destroyed my beautiful yard.

This is outrageous! That grass smelled wonderful. My lawn did nothing to deserve to be treated so cruelly.

Don’t worry blogger friends, I will find the ‘dozer who did this!

This was a very frustrating interview. First of all, he smiled the whole time. I can’t understand how a man who sat there and watched as his play equipment was taken right before his very eyes can still be smiling!

Sadly, I got nothing out of him. He did not even bat an eye at my good cop, bad cop routine.

Witness 2: Peanut

Peanut says that she was also “totally shocked” by the disappearance. I find this statement interesting because when I first told her about it she didn’t actually seem all that shocked.

During the course of the interrogation, Peanut pointed out that since the parking lot was repaved around the same time that the play equipment went missing, that it could have something to do with the construction.

I hate to admit it but that sounds like a good lead. However, I am still suspicious. So as of now, Peanut is the primary dog of interest.

Former RMH Family Gives Back!

Many of our families come back to Winston-Salem in the years following their stay at the House for follow up appointments with doctors. While they are town, they often stop in to say hi!

Kelly and Clayton Davis came by to visit recently and dropped off a delicious rhubarb pie for families and staff. Kelly stayed at the Ronald McDonald House for 12-weeks in 2000 while Clayton, a preemie, was cared for at Brenner Children’s Hospital. She and Clayton come by whenever they are in town to bring treats and Wish List items for RMH guests.

We were so glad that they came by and very grateful for their continued support of the House!

A LOT!

Our volunteers have been busying moving furniture around the House as the expansion gets closer to completion:

We have had several lovely surprise visits including one from a sweet young lady named Salem:

Salem, her mom, and baby brother stopped by with a wonderful surprise for RMH families! Salem raised money for the House at her birthday party this year, collecting a total of $167 for the House. We are so honored that she would think of RMH families on her birthday!

And last but not least, Watson has been very busy overseeing cabinet installation:

So busy in fact that he said had to call in Wilma for assistance.

However, I suspect that Watson’s true reason for asking for help has nothing to do with lack of time but rather lack of height. You see, Watson, who is 15 inches tall in bare paws, is having a bit of trouble inspecting the top drawers… ;)

Ryan's Rock N' Roll Run is this Saturday!

Ryan's Rock N' Roll Run was started two years ago in memory of Ryan Glenny. This year, a portion of the proceeds will go to the Ronald McDonald House of Winston-Salem.

We would love to see you this Saturday at the Boone Greenway Trail in Boone, North Carolina. The run starts at 9:00 am and there will be live music!

Little Miracles

Have you ever met a miracle? If you come by to visit to Ronald McDonald House you are bound to meet one, we see miracles practically every day here at the House! One of these little miracles came back to visit us the other day, please allow me to introduce you to Miracle M.!

Miracle was born in October 2006 weighing only 1 pound and 2 ounces. She spent four months under the watchful care of the doctors and nurses of Brenner Children’s Hospital here in Winston-Salem. While Miracle was at the hospital, her mom Renita stayed as a guest at the Ronald McDonald House.

Miracle is now a bubbly, smiley, healthy four-year-old who loves Happy Feet, the Lion King and playing with friends in her pre-k class!

The staff here at the House was very touched recently when we received a call from a Taylorsville, NC family.

Rachel raised $500.00 for The House in celebration of her 6th birthday! She received gifts of money for the House in lieu of presents. Rachel’s friends and family were thrilled to help raise the money for the families staying at the Ronald McDonald House of Winston-Salem!

We have the most creative student volunteers!

One of those volunteers is Sara Persiani, a senior at Ledford High School in Davidson County. Sara decided to make the Ronald McDonald House of Winston-Salem the focus of her senior project this year. While seniors are only required to do 15 hours of community service as a part of their project, Sara went above and beyond, clocking in 50 hours of volunteer time here at the House.

She came to the House on several occasions throughout the year to make dinner and bake for families and documented it all in a gorgeous scrapbook.

Sara's biggest hit with families was definitely her 'Magic Reindeer Food' recipe. The kids staying at the House really appreciated her thoughtfulness, after all, those reindeer work hard pretty hard on Christmas Eve. They need a snack too!

My Latest Investigation

I know it has been a while since I last blogged but, I have had a lot going on lately. Frankly, I have been feeling a bit overworked. I mean, not only have I been pulling my usual duties as House mascot and watchdog but I have also been moonlighting in construction site management.

Honestly, I just don’t know what these construction guys would do without my barking orders.

But, all of this hard work is really starting to pay off. Just look at the progress we have made. Here I am with Mom and RMH work study student Rachel in October 2009. Oh yeah, Peanut was there too.

And now look at the place:

It’s the prettiest dog house on the block for sure; maybe even the prettiest on the whole street!

My construction team tells me it will be done this summer. That is great news because I know there are lots and lots of families over at the hospital waiting for a cozy place to stay. Plus, I am really in need of a vacation, I’m thinking Cancun. This is one Basset Hound that could really use a water bowl with a little umbrella in it!

Congratulations Outstanding Volunteer Award Winners!

We are thrilled to announce that Family Room volunteers John and Dinah Reece and Family Support Program volunteer Mary Martha Douglas were honored this year at the Forsyth County Governor‘s Awards for Outstanding Volunteer Service!

Each year, Forsyth County recognizes special volunteers in our community at an annual awards event. This year’s event was an awards breakfast, held on Thursday, April 29 at Salemtowne in Winston-Salem.

HandsOn Northwest North Carolina and The United Way of Forsyth County encouraged organizations like the Ronald McDonald House to nominate two volunteers (one group and one individual) who graciously give their time to serve others. This year we were honored to nominate John and Dinah Reece in the group category and Mary Martha Douglas in the individual category.

Family Volunteer Award Winners

John and Dinah Reece were awarded with the "Family Volunteer Award" for their dedicated service to the Ronald McDonald House Family Rooms here in Winston-Salem.

The Reece’s volunteer in the Family Room at Forsyth Medical Center, where they have collectively served over 650 hours since they first began in 2008. Over the past two years, they have provided compassionate support to families seeking respite from the toughest medical situations.

In addition to their time spent working with Family Room visitors, John and Dinah also manage the Room’s supply inventory. Once a week, Dinah shops with another volunteer, Christy, for supplies needed to keep the Room ready for families. John, an engineer retired from Reynolds Tobacco Company, is always on hand to tackle any problem, big or small, in the Family Room. From fixing pantry shelves to wrestling with out of control washing machines, John can handle it all!

We are especially grateful to John and Dinah for generously volunteering to cook and serve Christmas dinner to families in the Forsyth Medical Center Family Room last Christmas. What a blessing it was for the families of sick children to have John and Dinah at the hospital over the Christmas holiday!

The Reece’s are also active volunteers at Reagan High School, Old Town Baptist Church and Hospice. Dinah, a retired teacher, also mentors young teachers here in the area. John and Dinah have been married for 43 years and have four grandchildren.

Congratulations John and Dinah and thank you for tirelessly supporting and caring for the families of the Ronald McDonald House Family Rooms!

Also honored at the breakfast was RMH Family Support Program volunteer Mary Martha Douglas.

Mary Martha was honored as a nominee for the “Adult Volunteer Award.” She has been an outstanding volunteer here at the House, serving in many different capacities over the past 24 years. Mary Martha began her journey with the Ronald McDonald House as a member of The Friends organization. As a Friend, she has served as Mailing Chairwoman, Meals Coordinator, Luminary Assembly Chairwoman and Chairwoman of the Family Liaisons Committee. Mary Martha has also served as both President and Vice President of the Friends. She currently serves on the Ronald McDonald House Board of Directors and is Chairwoman of the Events Committee.

Since 2008, Mary Martha has also worked with the families of the Ronald McDonald House as a Family Support Volunteer. She delivers her own special brand of love and support to families at their children’s hospital bedside. Her maternal devotion has provided an enormous amount of comfort to the moms and dads of sick kids, who feel confident knowing she will be there with their child when then need to rest for few minutes at the House.

Mary Martha and her husband, Walker, have four children, two of whom are also RMH volunteers. In addition to her work with the Ronald McDonald House, Mary Martha is an active volunteer with St. Leo’s Catholic Church, Summit School and R.J. Reynolds High School.

If you ever come to the House for a visit there is something you will learn pretty quickly, the Ronald McDonald House knows good food.

You see, some of the best, most delectable, most unbelievably good-smelling meals ever prepared come through the doors of this House every single day. Oven roasted chicken, creamy pasta casseroles, slow-cooked green beans, Carolina BBQ… Italian, Mexican, Chinese, French, German and even authentic Greek! You name it and it is probably in one of our refrigerators.

And then, there’s dessert. Oh boy is there dessert. Pecan pies, double chocolate fudge cakes, delicately iced sugar cookies, sinfully sweet brownies, ice cream sundaes, zesty lemon bars…. Is your mouth watering yet?

How about now?

An extremely talented team of volunteers, friends, church groups, businesses and neighbors keeps the House kitchen stocked with every type of comfort food you can imagine. And for a family coping with the stress of caring for a very sick child, not having to worry about what to cook or how to pay for their next meal is a tremendous blessing.

Over the years we have seen some pretty spectacular recipes and we would like to share some of our families’ favorites with you here on the blog. Favorites like this beautiful strawberry cake made by Cathie Heck Loeser, a member of the Medical Center Guild.

Cathie sure picked a crowd pleaser with this cake. Or should I say cakes. Yes, she made two of these beauties. To say these almost too-pretty-to-eat cakes were a hit with the families would be an understatement!

Strawberry Cake
Adapted recipe from the “Pass the Plate” cookbook,

a collection of recipes from Christ Church in New Burn, NC.

Cake:

1 (18-ounce) box white cake mix (Cathie uses Betty Crocker brand)
3 tsp flour
1 (3-ounce) box of strawberry jello
1 (10-ounce) package frozen strawberries, thawed
1/3 cup water
1 cup canola oil
4 eggs

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour two 8 or 9 inch pans or grease and flour sides of pans and cut out a circle of waxed paper to fit the bottom of the pan. Mix cake mix, flour and jello together. In a separate bowl, mix ¾ cup strawberries, water and oil. Add this to the cake mixture and blend well. Add eggs one at a time and beat 1 minute after adding each egg. Pour into pans and bake for 35 minutes.

Icing:
½ cup butter
2 ½- 3 cups of confectioners’ sugar
1 tsp vanilla
2 tbsp milk (Cathie says that she can use up to a 1/3 a cup of milk)

Cream all ingredients together. If icing is too thin, add more sugar.

Decoration:
Cathie decorated her cakes with fresh strawberries.

Girl Scout receives Bronze Award for work with RMH

We are so lucky to have the help of many local scouts here at the Ronald McDonald House. One of these scouts, Melissa Blakemore, recently completed her Bronze Award Project by making Easter baskets for RMH families.

Melissa, a Junior Girl Scout from Pilot Mountain, NC, made 17 Easter baskets chock full of candy, games and treats for the families staying here. The baskets were beautiful and of course, the families loved them!

In addition to helping to make the day brighter for those who called the House home this Easter, she has also been involved with the House through our meals program. Melissa and her mom, Diane, provided meals for our families on several occasions over the last few months. In fact, last Wednesday they delivered a delicious dinner to the Family Room at Brenner Children’s Hospital.

According the Girl Scouts of America, “the Girl Scout Bronze Award, the highest honor a Junior Girl Scout can earn, requires her to learn the leadership and planning skills necessary to follow through on a project that makes a positive impact on her community.”

We definitely think she made a positive impact! Congratulations Melissa for earning your Bronze Award and thank you for supporting the families of the Ronald McDonald House!

Saying Goodbye to a Special RMH Friend

I have some sad news to share with you today, dear blog friends. Over the weekend, we said goodbye to one of our most beloved therapy dogs, Kelly. Kelly was a wonderful friend and an amazing therapy dog. If you could only see the joy he brought to the kids who stay at the Ronald McDonald House, you would know what I mean!

Kelly had exceptionally good manners, which he learned as a puppy from his much older sisters, Abbie, a Golden Retriever, and Annie, a very friendly cat. One day, Kelly’s human mom and dad decided his manners were so good that he should become a Certified Therapy Dog. As a Certified Therapy Dog, Kelly provided an immeasurable amount of love and comfort to the special people he visited. He would do tricks and wag his tail for anyone who would watch and he especially loved to play with kids! Here is a picture of Kelly playing with his friend, Shana:

Kelly told me once that when he wasn’t helping out here or visiting patients at Forsyth Medical Center, he was hanging out with his mom and dad at the beach. He loved to play in the surf!

Kelly will be greatly missed by his owners, George and Jeanne White, by his little sister, Molly (who is also a therapy dog), and by the many children who loved him here at the Ronald McDonald House.

We Love our Sport a Shirt Helpers!

We were so lucky to have the lovely ladies of Republic Mortgage Insurance Company’s Administrative Services Group come to help sort Sport a Shirt, Share a Night tee shirts last week.

This picture may have been snapped while they were taking a quick break but let me tell you something, these ladies sure know how to get the job done. They sorted, labeled, boxed, and organized over 200 orders… that’s 6,200 tee shirts!

RMIC has been a wonderful friend to the families staying in our house throughout the years. Their donation of dozens of Build-a-Bear bears each Christmas puts a smile on the faces of so many sick children and their siblings. For that, we could not be more grateful. Thank you RMIC!

And of course, where would we be without our incredible House volunteers?! They have pitched in countless hours organizing the remaining Sport a Shirt orders and getting the House ready for pick up day on Thursday.

Sport a Shirt, Share a Night tee shirts have officially arrived at the House and this year, they came folded thanks to our friends at Oracle Packaging in Winston-Salem!

Oracle folded and boxed 7,000 (wow!) Sport a Shirt tee shirts and delivered them to the House yesterday!

We are so grateful to Oracle for all of their help and the amazing job they did, the shirts look so neat and organized! Speaking of neat and organized, you are probably wondering where exactly we are storing 7,000 tee shirts. Well…

Hello Ronald McDonald House fans!

Move over Ronald. There is only one true house mascot around here and that's me!

Watson here. In addition to being the House mascot, I also provide on-site security. You see, I used to do some detective work but now I live here full-time with my mom Jeanie, who is the House night manager. The job seemed like a perfect fit.

I generally try to lay pretty low; my duties include a lot of sniffing, listening and good old-fashioned investigating. For example, this week I investigated the Sport a Shirt, Share a Night tee shirts.

My thorough investigation leads me to conclude that I look great in navy blue. I also found out that the shirt fits very nicely and that the design is top notch. So, I have decided to buy one. After all, all of the proceeds from Sport a Shirt, Share a Night tee shirts sales go to the families who stay in my house!

I also decided to buy a Sport a Shirt, Share a Night tee shirt for my sister, Peanut.

She may look like your average four-year-old rat terrier but don't let that cute face and great outfit fool you—she is a devious, devious toy thief. Devious!

Well, I'm off. Peanut mentioned something about tea and dog biscuits. I must investigate.

The Easter Bunny came to the House early this year! He had a little help from our wonderful group of Friends, who decked out the House with all kinds of beautiful decorations for families to enjoy while they are here.

Welcome to the brand new Ronald McDonald House of Winston- Salem Blog, I am so glad you stopped by!

I'm Laura, the House development assistant, tweeter, face-booker and blogger! Though I have only been an official staff member for a couple of months, my journey with the Ronald McDonald House actually began in the summer of 2009 as a volunteer.

When I first considered becoming a volunteer in the Ronald McDonald House Family Room at Brenner Children's Hospital, I knew only a little bit about the House mission. I knew that the House was a place for families to stay when their child was in the hospital and I knew that many of the families using the House often had no where else to go. But what I didn’t know is that the Ronald McDonald House is more that just a place to stay. It is a home.

Our house is in the heart of Winston-Salem’s historic Ardmore neighborhood and it is a beautiful place, both inside and out. In many ways, our house is just like your house. Families staying with us can sit down together for a home-cooked meal, pitch in with small chores, help themselves to anything in the kitchen (we always have tons of treats) and even run a load of laundry while they watch TV. We don’t want them to feel like they are in a hotel; we want them to feel like they are at home!

We also make sure our families have plenty of access to fun things to do while they stay with us—from crafts, to bingo, to therapy dog visits! And we are blessed to be the only Ronald McDonald House in the world with a full-time Family Support Program! Our Family Support Program Coordinator, Chacy SanFilippo, assists families coping with their child's illness through hospital visits, support groups and stress management activities. Chacy’s specially trained team of volunteers keeps our house bustling with all kinds of therapeutic activities and events. They are great!

Not only do we provide families from outside of Forsyth County with a place to stay near the hospital, our hospital Family Rooms provide the families of all pediatric patients with a cozy place to sit, grab a snack and check their email just a few steps from their child. Volunteers at the Brenner Children's Hospital and Forsyth Medical Center Family Rooms answer questions, give directions and keep the rooms full of food, books and magazines.

And with 17 (soon to be 35) families staying in the house every night, a team of wonderful, loving volunteers and a staff of 12, things can get a little crazy around here! :)

Did I mention we are in the middle of a massive construction project too!?
